Rotarians from Queens, N.Y. close a portion of JFK Int’l Airport Runway for a good cause and you're invited to join them, don't miss out!
~ Special Guest Runner: “Tara Costa” Season 7 - Biggest Loser Finalist ~
New York, NY - February 2010 - On April 18, 2010, the members of the JFK Rotary Club will be hosting their major fundraiser, The Thomas Carmody Memorial - JFK Rotary Club "5K Runway Run"
The JFK Rotary Club is a member of the international service organization, Rotary International the world's first service club organization. More than 1.2 million members volunteer their time and talent and pool their resources to help serve communities in need. Rotary’s primary commitment to “Service Above Self” is practiced through the four avenues of service: vocational, international, community and club.
Since its charter in 1970, the Rotary Club of JFK International Airport has become one of JFK Airport’s leading local service organizations. It is comprised of local business, airline, and professional people who work within the JFK Airport community and share the same common principles, which have guided Rotarians throughout the world since Rotary’s founding in 1905.
The first race was run in April 1972, it is a very unique race as the main runway is actually closed to aircraft landing and taking off. Aircrafts are routed to land and take off from a secondary runway during the race. During its history the race has never been canceled. The Rotary Club works closely with Airport authorities to ensure the security programs in place are strictly adhered to. Runners actually run on the longest Runway at JFK which is almost 14,000 feet, although only a short portion of the main runway is used for the race.
The funds raised from the "JFK Rotary Club ~ 5K Runway Run" are used to support organizations such as The Gift of Life International Inc.; they sponsor terminally ill children from countries with limited medical and technological services, for life-saving heart operations. Boy Scouts “Air Explorer” Program; a co-ed program for students who have a career interest in the aviation industry. The Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf; they enhance the quality of life for people who are Deaf, or who have other special communication needs. In addition, due to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the “Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort”.
The race will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Bldg. 14 – JFK Int’l Airport; Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race begins promptly 9:00 a.m.
