William P. Metzendorf |
It is with great pleasure that I will be serving this District as your Governor. A District with a history of many great projects in our own communities and many communities throughout the world. Keep up the good deeds you all do and encourage those not yet involved in their community, near or far, to get involved. The easiest way is to follow this year's theme, "Create Awareness - Take Action".
Starting with this Newsletter, I will be introducing my entire staff, starting with my Assistant Governors and the clubs they will be representing.
One of my biggest projects, and yours, this year will be to increase your club's membership by a net of five. On July 19 there will be a Welcome Governor Party, and I would like to induct all new members together, and acknowledge their sponsors.
I will be making my Official Visits starting the end of July and finishing in October. I want to get as much information to the members as fast as possible, and an appearance is the best way to do that. This Newsletter is the next best, BUT does everybody read it? I hope you all do. A lot of time and effort is put into its preparation, and publishing.
Attendance reports are mandatory. The membership wants to know how they stand in the District. Please get the report into our District Secretary by the 10th of the month. IT IS REQUIRED BY R.I.

ROTARY HONORS STUDENT OF THE MONTH
At the luncheon meeting of the West Hempstead Rotary Club, Amy Huynh was honored as Student of the Month and Valedictorian of the Year 2000 graduating class of West Hempstead High School. In attendance was Carol Eisenberg, Superintendent of Schools. Amy spoke quietly of her plans to become a doctor of medicine and to do research in the field of DNA. When questioned about her vocational choice, she admitted that there were many opportunities available to her but that she knew that she could make the greatest contribution to the society by working to eliminate disease. She told the assembled Rotary Club of her summer experience as a researcher, which gave her the motivation to enter medicine.
Amy's family came to this country in 1978, through the auspices of The West Hempstead Rotary Club. Former President Howard Bertanthal, now deceased, was the brainchild of a plan to have a local Rotary Club act as a sponsor to a dislocated and persecuted Vietnamese family. Five people came to this country with much left behind and many challenges ahead. They worked together with each using the strongest skills to benefit the whole. The most verbal became the spokesperson and they all bravely ventured out into a strange new world. Once established with roots here in America, the family decided to bring Amy into the world. Amy arrived amid a struggle to run a newly established take-out restaurant in Baldwin. They were able to purchase a home here in West Hempstead. Senior members of the family have gone on to graduate college and to seek careers in government, private industry and homemaking.
Today, the family prospers through hard work and an on-going willingness to explore. They still maintain a connection to the people in the West Hempstead Rotary Club. Their trek has led them to a new land in which they have found freedom and democracy. The West Hempstead Rotary Club is proud to see Amy Huynh become a successful member of the community.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE
By Kathy Gibson
Eradicate Polio
It's a new year; make a difference! One of the first projects District 7250 will tackle is PolioPlus - the theme: "Help Eradicate Polio by 2005." It costs 50 cents to immunize a child against polio. The world is 98% polio free, but as long as there is one case still reported, it will come back. Although there have been no reported polio cases in Americas since 1991, polio could be reintroduced from another polio-endemic country. This is not a time to be complacent.
Rotary International in partnership with organizations such as UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) and WHO (World Health Organization) have made a commitment to eradicate polio by the year 2005. By that time Rotary International's contributions to the global Polio eradication effort will be approximately a half-billion dollars, and they will have mobilized hundreds of thousands of volunteers to help with the immunization effort. To date, 120 nations around the world have benefited from PolioPlus grants. Rotary is the leading non-governmental contributor.
According to John Sever, M.D., member of the R.I. International PolioPlus Committee (reported in The Rotarian, August 1999) Rotarians from polio-free countries can ensure the success of the polio eradication effort by providing critical supplies and materials for tracking and reporting the disease; surveillance is the key to eradication.
Be proud of this. In the winter of 1998, "more than 100,000 Rotary volunteers joined their friends, families, the government and health officials in India to immunize 130 million children under five years of age - signifying the largest health event ever in the world" (reported in The Rotarian, October 1999). As Rotarians, we have incredible power, power to serve around the world.
Each club in District 7250 will receive canisters to be distributed within the community, seek out high-traffic locations and move the canisters during the campaign. Make a commitment to distribute, monitor and collect the donations. Use a canister at every Rotary meeting to collect loose change, late penalities, and any fines for infractions. Make a difference!

After being discharged I became a member of the New York City Transit Police Dept. Additionally during this time I went to New York Inst. of Technology and received a BS Degree in Behavioral Science. After graduation I attended Touro Law School and was awarded a JD Degree. Upon my retirement from the Police I worked in a Law Office in Queens Village and it was at this time, 1988, that I was invited to join Rotary by the Queens Village Rotary Club. Since becoming a Rotarian I have held every Officer's position and Chaired all the Committees in my Club, which is now known as the Rotary Club of Eastern Queens. While being active in my Club I open my own Law Practice, became an Administrative Law Judge for the City of New York. TAKEN FROM A RECENT NEWSLETTER OF THE BROOKLYN CLUB
In the insurance industry we have an organization called the Million Dollar Roundtable. Its membership is comprised only, of those insurance professionals who meet certain production levels. You can become a Life Member of the Roundtable by qualifying for a certain number of years, either ten or twelve.
The real industry heroes, however, make it a point of pride to qualify each and every year. They are the Life and Qualifying members. Do they have the right to sit back and talk about what they did long ago? They sure do. But something, inside them just won't let that happen. They are constantly searching for new and improved ways to help the public purchase the amount and kind of coverage they should have. Some know the laws about estate taxes better than many accountants and attorney, and are called upon often to share their considerable knowledge. From this, they generate huge cases with large premium dollars. And others still take pride in the small kitchen table sales that guarantee that the children will attend the college of their choice, there will always be a Christmas, and that no one has to lose the family home. All members of the Roundtable take great pride in earning their stripes each and every year.
In Rotary, we only have Rotarians, but perhaps we too should have categories for those who do the job every year and those who rest on their laurels. But Rotary isn't like that. Paul Harris, the founder of the world's premier service believed in "Service Above Self", not "I've been a member for umpteen years, so I don't have to work at service anymore." We earn the right to wear our pins daily with pride only if we are doing the work of Rotary. Every project doesn't have to be a home run. Al Smith said it best at our Club Assembly last week. "Let's get back to our roots, how we felt when we were issued the pins," Al said. "Deeds, not words are what counts. Let's take small steps. Let's be a bit more humble. And do projects to help children."
Inspirational words from a man who, according to Henry Delgado, is a "Source of inspiration."
My suggestion. Enough talk, enough back and frontstabbing. Let's be about the business of Rotary.

CAROL ZEILMAN WINS BASEBALL TICKETS
![]() |
The 250 stubs for the drawing to choose who would win the pair of tickets to the Subway Series game on July 7th at Shea Stadium were arranged in numerical order. A large drum to thoroughly mix the stubs was opened to receive the entries. As watchers held their breath, the stubs were dropped into the drum, the cover was fastened, and the drum was turned as all watched the stubs flying around inside the drum. It turned faster and faster and finally stopped. The drum was opened and one lucky Rotarian was the winner.
President of the Westbury-Carle Place Rotary Club, Rob DiBaise said, "And the winner... CAROL ZEILMAN!"
Carol Zeilman is a member of the Westbury/Carle Place Rotary Club. Her vocation is Real Estate; she is with Rowan Realty in Carle Place. Congratulations, Carol!

BASEBALL, FELLOWSHIP AND FUND-RAISING IN OUTSTANDING DISTRICT ACTIVITY
Two hundred fifty tickets to the NY Mets vs Baltimore Orioles game on June 6th were bought by clubs throughout our District. Okay, so it poured, and we all waited to see if the game would be called, and waited, and called, and waited, and came anyway to find out that lightning was starting and the game was called. Well, those tickets are good for any home game of the NY Mets and those of us who were soaked still had a great time and went back on Thursday to see the Mets play and win a great game. Every ticket sold had a chance to win a pair of tickets to the sold-out NY Mets vs NY Yankees game on July 7th, at 7:10pm. Many cheering Rotarians and guests said: "Rotary is great to have this, let's do it again next year!"

HAPPY NEW YEAR (IN ROTARY, THAT IS)
By Mike Coco
I am happy to serve some of the best Clubs in the District as Assistant District Governor.
The Bayville/Centre Island Club recently changed its meeting place and now meets at Steve's Pier One at 33 Bayville Avenue, Bayville. Gregory F. Fricke, who served as Vice President during the 1999/2000 Rotary year will be serving as President. Greg's classification is Private Investigator. At the meeting on June 13, 2000, the Club awarded Scholarships to deserving High School students.
The Glen Cove Rotary Club is led by John Macari. His classification in the Club is Controller, City of Glen Cove. John will be busy during his first week of his Presidency as the Club will be participating in a Waterfront Festival in Glen Cove on June 30, July 1 & 2, when the Tall Ships will be in Glen Cove.
The Oyster Bay Rotary Club will be headed this year by Tom Reardon. He is a past President having served as President in 1979/80. Tom's classification is Insurance/Casualty and his experience will be of great value to the Oyster Bay Club this year. The Club will not relax during this Rotary year even though it was quite busy being the Governor's Club during 1999/2000. This will be the first full year of the Interact Club at Oyster Bay High School and the Club is happy to see the progress that Interact has made in Oyster Bay. It is a very active, energetic group!
The Williston Park Rotary Club is glad to have Lud Odierna back for encore performance as President this Rotary year. Lud's classification is a Mortgage Broker. The Club is busy getting ready for their famously successful zeppoli sale at the Williston Day Street Fair which will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2000. Proceeds have already been earmarked for local needs. The Club had its Installation and Awards Dinner on Monday, June 19, 2000. The dinner was well attended by Rotarians and guests. Please remember that last year, the Williston Park Rotary Club became a Breakfast Club and meets on Wednesdays at 8:00am at IHOP, at the corner of Willis and Hillside Avenues, Williston Park.
I urge Tom Barry, Kevin Horton, Angela Koenig and Marilyn Radovsky, the Bulletin Editors from the above Clubs, to send me copies of their weekly bulletin. All Clubs should also be sending their weekly bulletin to the District Governor and to John Capri, the District Governor Elect. As I told you when I met with each Club, if I get the bulletin, I will be able to include information about your Club in this column.
Yours in Rotary, Mike Coco
